What went wrong in the 2000 presidential election? This analysis paper will have answers. This paper will provide not only what went wrong, but also how similar situations can be prevented in the future. I will also talk about the technology issues including outdated and inaccurate vote tallying methods and equipment as well as poorly designed ballots. There are different problems that occurred that day as well as having issues relating to future voting and voters within the United States. Basic Facts about the Election
The 2000 presidential election was the 54th presidential election. The election was between Republican George W Bush and Democratic Al Gore. The election was held on November 7th 2000. Former President Bill Clinton was not eligible to serve a third term. The ending election results revolved around Florida, where margin of victory triggered a recount. The 2000 Presidential Election
As I mentioned before, near ending election results revolved around Florida’s votes. Independent investigations in that state revealed serious irregularities directed mostly against ethnic minorities and low income residents who usually voted mainly Democratic. Around 36,000 new voters were turned down because their names have never been added to the voter rolls by Florida’s secretary of state Kathleen Harris. Other voters were turned down because they were declared almost always incorrectly “convicted felons”. Another suspicious thing happened that day. George Bush Jr, Jeb Bush gave orders that state troopers near the polling sites to search people’s cars, resulting in delaying people to be able to vote for hours. It was also noted that uncounted ballot boxes went missing or were found in unexplained places or were never collected from certain African American precincts.
