Plan of Investigation

!
The purpose of this investigation is to research the following question: To what Extent Did the Kent State Shooting represent a turning point in the Anti- War Movement between 1968-1975? The scope of the investigation is to establish the extent whether the killing of four students in 1970 changed the Anti-war movement under the Johnson and Nixon presidencies. In addition, the aim of the research is to explore the impact of the Kent State shootings on the change in public opinion about the war. To understand the context of the growth of the antiwar movement, one must look at what it was like before under President Johnson and how it changed under the Nixon administration. To determine the impact of the Kent State shootings on the anti-war movement I will be using academic books, journal articles and testimonies of participants. Two of the sources that will be evaluated for their origin, purpose, value and limitations will be photo that was taken from a senior at Kent State and the documentary “Kent State: The Day the War Came Home” directed by Chris Triffo.

The Anti-War Movement Before Kent State

The TV images created an impact causing many to turn against the war. Historian Zinn claimed war opposition emerged from civil rights movements because African-Americans believed they should not fight while being denied equality. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of many who spoke out: Somehow this madness must cease. We must stop the war now. Mohammed Ali was stripped of his title and jailed 5 years for refusing military service.

Opposition increased, many prominent senators began to criticize the administration’s decisions. By 1965 antiwar sentiment became mainstream, as demonstrated by teach-ins at the University of Michigan. From then on, massive antiwar efforts centred on colleges, with the students playing leading roles and capturing public attention and putting pressure on government to listen to the people. Student protestors grew up in times of political assassinations, civil right protests, contraception medication, entertainment drugs etc. This generation questioned authority in a way not

previously experienced.
By 1968, only 25% of Americans approved of President Johnson's military decisions and almost seven million protested, many against the draft. After 1967, protests became more violent, which even including bombing. Protests levelled off after Nixon’s election, with his...
