Learn as if you were to live forever.” ― Mahatma Gandhi Adult education is very important because many elderly people feel helpless at times of need and have been dependent. Education can enable them to become more independent. Many adults have not finished their high school education. A high school education is incredibly important; whether someone is trying to get a basic job, or is thinking about college, a high school diploma is needed. Adult education is the way for those adults who did not finish high school to get their high school diploma and continue on with their lives. Adult education is at night, so that the adults who attend it may still continue to go to work. This allows these adults to continue to progress in their lives while adding more education to their resume and mind. Education in its general sense is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research. It is education and enlightenment that lifts a nation to the heights of progress and greatness. Unfortunately, the situation in India, at least in some of the states, education is disgraceful and awful. At present about 60% of the people in India are illiterate; they cannot differentiate a buffalo from a black mole. Adult education is needed because it is a powerful auxiliary and an essential incentive to primary education. Illiteracy and ignorance is a sin; an illiterate adult is a burden on society. Contemporary adult education can take many different forms. Colleges and universities have instituted evening programs, correspondence courses, distance learning programs and online courses; community colleges have been especially active in this area.
