CHILD AND YOUNG PERSON DEVELOPMENT
Learning outcome: 1.1
Describe the expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19 years, to include: a)Physical development
b)Communication and intellectual development
c)Social, emotional and behavioural development
| Physical Development| Communication & Intellectual Development| Social, Emotional & Behavioural Development| 0-3 years| First year - Fast physical development Little control over their bodiesThey have more control over their bodies at 12 monthsSecond year - they tend to continue to grow and develop quicklyAt this stage most children are able to walkPlay with balls and enjoy climbing for e.g. on stairs, furnitureThird year -have more control over pencils, crayons and will enjoy turning pages on booksAble to use cups and feed themselvesExplore by using toys such as tricycles| It is important for babies to be stimulated and have interest shown on themIn cases where babies are neglected and not enough time spent with adult, they will find it difficult to learn skills off effective communication laterAt this age babies will be listening to language from those around them and will enjoy songs and gamesTry and speak around 12 months, pronunciation won’t be clearBetween 1 and 2 start to put words togetherBetween 2-3 years children will start to use negative plurals in their speech| Very young children will be starting to find out about their own identitiesThey will need to form a strong attachment, the earliest which will be with parents and carersIn nursery; children are given key workers who will be main contactChildren may start to develop tantrums through frustration and will want and need to start doing things for themselves| 3-7 years| At this stage, children will be able to carry out more co-ordinated movements and will be growing in confidence They will be refining the skills developed so far and will have more control over fine motor skills such as cutting, writing and drawingThey will also become more confident in activities such as running, hopping, kicking a ball and using larger equipment| More social and wider experienceStart to use an increasing number of familiar phrases and expressionsAsk large numbers of questions and will be able to talk about things past, future tenses with greater confidenceChildren become more skilled at aspects of number and writing as well as continuing to learn about the worldThey will be looking for adult approval and will be starting to learn to read| Children will start developing identity and will be starting to play with their peers and socialise using imaginative play, this helps develop their concept of different roles in their lifeImportant for them to learn the importance of boundaries and why they are necessaryRespond well to being given responsibility for e.g. class helpers, need adult approval| 7-12 years| Children will continue to grow and develop and will now be refining many of their skillsThey may start to have hobbies and interestThey may also be able to make very controlled finer movements such as those required for playing an instrument etcGirls in particular will start to show some early signs of puberty from the age of 10 or 11With boys the usually start puberty later, when there will be another period of rapid physical growth| Most children will be fluent speakers of a language and will be developing and refining their skills at reading and writing Their language skills will enable them to think about and discuss their ideas and learning in more abstract termsThey will be developing their own thoughts and preferencesWill be able to transfer information and think in a more abstract way| Children’s friendship will become more settled and they will have groups of friends They will need to have the chance to solve problems and carry out activities which require more independenceThey will continue to need praise and encouragement and will be...
