Water Baptism

Where do we get the word Baptize? The word Baptize has been derived from the Greek ‘baptizo’ – which literally means to dip, plunge, or completely immerse in liquid. From the Greek, the word was used in the Art of Dyeing. An article had to be completely immersed or dipped in the dye so that whatever was being dipped – was completely “changed” in color.

The use of the word in much of the New Testament gives clarity that sprinkling or pouring of water on the individual is not sufficient. Scriptural baptism mandates that a complete immersion in water is required.

Acts 8:38 -- “And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.”

John 3:23 -- “And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there; and they came, and were baptized.”

The Significance of Water Baptism

1. Washing & Cleansing – 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the Kingdom of God...And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

2. Symbolic of the death and resurrection of Jesus – Romans 6:3-5 “Know ye not, that so many us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.”

3. Unity by baptism into Christ – 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink...
