HOW OPINION AND CHARACTER CAN INFLUENCE OUR SOCIETY.
What is opinion? Let us begin by understanding the meaning of opinion and character, Opinion can be defined in many ways; Wikipedia defines opinion as a belief about matters Commonly considered to be subjective i.e., it is based on that which is less than absolutely Certain, and is the result of emotion or interpretation of facts. An opinion may be supported by an argument, although people may draw opposing opinions from the same set of facts. Opinions rarely change without new arguments being presented; Collins dictionary defines opinion as belief, feeling, view, idea, theory, notion, conviction, point of view, sentiment, viewpoint, persuasion, conjecture.
Character can be defined as personality, nature, make-up, cast, constitution, bent, attributes, temper, temperament, complexion, disposition, individuality, marked traits (Collins dictionary) or can also be defined as the aggregate of features and traits that form the individual nature of some person or thing.
How do our opinions define us, let us try to integrate some of our opinions and the Christian Perspective, i will discuss 3 topics namely forgiveness, Leadership, Poverty and Wealth as i believe they will cover some of the most common issues affecting our society in general. FORGIVENESS
It is not uncommon for Christians to have questions about forgiveness. Forgiveness does not come easy for most of us. Our natural instinct is to recoil in self-protection or anger when we've been injured. We don't naturally overflow with mercy, grace and forgiveness when we've been wronged. We want to revenge
Is forgiveness a conscious choice, a physical act involving the will, or is it a feeling, an emotional
state of being? The Bible offers insight and answers to these and many more questions about
The year 2012 has seen a lot of senseless killings particularly in the Tana delta where
communities have been fighting each other over land and pasture not forgetting, the post
election violence that erupted after 2007 general elections where people that led to the loss of
many lives will forever remain etched in our minds, what makes a man kill
another man?, is it the environment we grew in where maybe one was told that tribe and ours are
mortal enemies , What if we changed our opinions of the other or in this case the other tribe
and accepted each other regardless of where we come from,can we avoid this bloodshed; The
bible instructs us to forgive each other the same way Godforgives us (Colossians 3:13), we must
learn to accept each other, Lewis b Semendes in his bookforgive and forget When you release
the wrongdoer from the wrong, you cut a malignant tumor out of your inner life. You set a
prisoner free, but you discover that the real prisoner was yourself."
How do we forgive when we don't feel like it? How do we translate the decision to forgive into A change of heart?We forgive by faith, out of obedience. Since forgiveness goes against our nature, we must forgive by faith, whether we feel like it or not. We must trust God to do the work in us that needs to be done so that the forgiveness will be complete. Philippians 1:6 says And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns
How will we know if we have truly forgiven?
We will know the work of forgiveness is complete when we experience the freedom that comes as a result. We are the ones who suffer most when we choose not to forgive. When we do forgive, the Lord sets our hearts free from the anger, bitterness, and resentment and hurt that previously imprisoned us.
