Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
Studying is one of the most important responsibilities one has during school. Maintaining good study habits will help one learn and succeed. Conversely, poor study habits will make it harder to excel in one’s studies.

Sports on the other hand, help students in improving their physical, psychological and social well-being. This healthy lifestyle could eventually help in the child’s progress not only in sports but in academics as well.

Southville International School and Colleges (SISC) believes in the balance between sports and academics. SISC offers diverse programs that cater to enhancing both their academics and sports intelligences.

The study is designed to find out how playing basketball could affect the study habits of selected lower school students of SISC.

The researcher chose this topic because he finds it interesting. For him, he knows that he will learn a lot from this study most especially because he too, is a basketball fanatic.

Statement of the Problem
This study entitled, Basketball Games and Study Habits of Selected Grade 6 and 7 Students of Southville International School and Colleges aimed to answer the following questions:
Specifically, it aimed to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the respondents when grouped into two: 2.1 those who play basketball
2.2 those who do not play basketball
2. What is the extent of study habits manifested by those who play basketball and those who do not? 3. Is there a difference in the manifested study habits of the respondents when grouped according to: 4.3 those who play

4.4 those who do not play
Significance of the Study
Students- This study may help the students in understanding the importance of having a good balance between sports and academics.
Teachers- This study may help the teachers learn more about keeping the balance between sports and study habits by providing rich activities that will cater to the different needs of the students.

S.I.S.C.- The study may help the school in improving its facility to better accommodate different sports and academic programs being offered to help keep the balance between sports and academics.

Parents- The study may help the parents understand the need to expose their children to different sports as well as sports programs that could help enhance their learning capacity and to optimize their learning potentials.

Definition of Terms
Basketball. This term means a game played between two teams of five players in which goals are scored by throwing a ball through a netted hoop fixed above each end. Study Habits. This refers to the ways that one studies. These are usually formed during the school years. \

Review of Related Literature
Basketball
Basketball is very popular as a casual way to exercise and as a competitive team sport. It is a fast-action game with lots of running and jumping, and provides a good physical workout. You can go out and shoot baskets by yourself or get involved in competition games. It is one of the most popular sports in the world and one of the most widely viewed. It is a team sport that involves two teams of five active players each trying to score points against one another by throwing a ball through a 300cm (10 foot) high hoop (the ‘basket’) under organised rules. It is played on both indoor and outdoor courts.

The size of the court, height of the basket, size of the basketball, and length of time that the game is played, all vary according to the age, size and skill level of players. Basketball is a fast moving game that involves a lot of variety, including shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, defence and much more.
