The Holy Kaaba

The Kaaba is a square-like box that is located at the center of the Holy Mosque in Mecca.  Muslims align themselves to the Kaaba during prayer and other forms of worship.  The Kaaba was built by Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon them, as ordered by God Almighty.  It has been rebuilt several times.

Facing the Kaaba During Prayer

Muslims around the world face the Kaaba while performing their prayers as an act of obedience to God. Thus all face the same single location.

The Kaaba’s Cloth

The cloth covering the Kaaba is a symbol of great respect and honour.  It was decorated before the prophet-hood of Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, and continued to be decorated in different colors.  Presently the Kaaba’s cloth is made of pure black silk with verses of the Qur’an embedded in it with gold.  It is changed once a year, during the Hajj season.

The Black Stone

The black stone, where Muslims begin their circling of the Kaaba, is located at the south eastern side.  The black stone can be kissed, touched, or pointed at, when it is passed.  This is out of respect and does not indicate that the stone is able to harm or bring good to anyone who does so.

The Station of Abraham

This is the stone Abraham stood on while building the Kaaba, and that Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon them both, used to pray behind after completing the circling of the Kaaba.

The Kaaba’s Door

From the Kaaba’s door one can enter into the Kaaba and reach its roof.  The door is 2.2m in height.

Zamzam Well

The well is located 20 meters from the Kaaba and Muslims consider it to be blessed water.  It gushed out of the ground as a blessing from God to His Prophet Ishmael, the son of Abraham, during his childhood, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon them both.
