The Preserved Qur’an
The Qur’an is a Book that Muslims believe is the word of God. It was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, as a mercy for humankind, and to be the criterion between truth and falsehood. It confirms the purpose of humankind’s existence, gives laws that are useful to humankind, and calls people to the best and most complete manners. The Qur’an informs us that God ensured that it would remain preserved, protected, and perfect throughout the ages, because Islam is the seal of religions and messages for all of humankind.
Memorizing the Qur’an
The primary objective is to understand the meaning of the Qur’an and to act according to its content. Muslims from every location and all ages compete to memorise the Qur’an, and teach it to others. It is estimated that yearly there are approximately 1.5 million additional people worldwide who memorize the Qur’an.
Verbal Recitation
Muslim scholars make exceptional efforts – to the smallest of details – to assure that the Qur’an is read just as the Messenger of God read it. The scholars listened and noted down the method of recitation from those before them, back to the time of the Messenger, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him. One can say with total certainty that a Muslim child in Indonesia reads the Qur’an today just as it was read in Mecca 15 centuries ago. This science is known as “Tajweed”.
Written Documentation
The style in which the Qur’an is written today remains the same as it was during the time of the Messenger, who instructed 23 of his companions to write it down, in his presence, whenever revelation was sent down to him. After his death it was collected and a detailed branch of knowledge was dedicated to the different ways every letter and movement could be written. This became known as the science of Qur’anic Calligraphy.
